- On completion of the studies, candidates will be able to demonstrate thorough understanding and have gained knowledge and skills of the principles, methods and procedures relevant to the specific programme specialisation in education.
- Candidates will be able to gain knowledge and understanding of the role that research plays in education, conduct basic evaluation and educational research.
- These studies will enable students to play a leadership role in professional educational activities in the different sectors of teaching in South Africa.
Admission Requirements
Requirements to apply for the BEd Honour's degree in Education, include but not limited to:
- A BEd or a B-degree + PGCE qualification at NQF level 7
- Aggregate of a minimum of 65% and higher in previous qualification
- Advanced computer literacy and personal access to Internet on a regular basis.
A limited number of student-intake per academic year, is in line with the Faculty of Education's enrolment planning and according to lecturers' capacity to service students.
The rules for BEdHons must be read together with the general academic rules of the university. Admission to this qualification takes place according to the general rules (A.6) of the university. Students must be in possession of the required qualifications for admission to study in the BEdHons programme selected.
Minimum and maximum duration
The minimum duration is two years, and the maximum study period is four years.
Annual Registration
Successful applicants register on an annual basis, either at the end of application year, or during January of the following year. No late registrations will be accepted.

All BEdHons programmes are offered as a structured two-year programme, with a fixed semester curriculum.
Method of Delivery
No contact sessions are provided for distance students.
The North-West University are committed to its students. Lecturers provide support to students utilising the Learner Management system eFundi Portal. The learner Management System (eFundi) supports communication between lecturers and students and creates a collaborative environment for them. Academic information such as subject content, important dates, additional sources, and forms of instruction are provided through eFundi.

A Learner Management system supports communication between lecturers and students and creates a collaboration environment for students and researchers. Academic information such as subject content, discussion forums, important dates, additional resources and supplementary instruction are clearly advised on e-Fundi.

Textbooks
Prescribed textbooks will be either electronically or in hard copies.
Links e-Textbooks will be uploaded on eFundi.
Hard copies must be sourced (bought) by the student.

What is the programme Curriculum Studies about? Curriculum Studies is the study of the curriculum, assessment and teaching-learning within continuously transforming and developing curriculum environments. It engages with social issues and global movements concerning Curriculum Studies internationally and nationally. Who should apply? Students who are passionate about Curriculum Studies and wish to become more knowledgeable in that respect. Opportunities for promotion, access to a career in academia or become a curriculum advisor. Students who wish to specialise in Curriculum Studies require this qualification to enrol for a MEd in Curriculum Studies. What can obtaining this degree do for you? This degree engages with international and national trends in the curriculum, assessment and teaching, as well as learning; the relationship between Curriculum Studies and social issues; research methodology theory and its application in Curriculum Studies; and the skills needed to participate in a continuously transforming curriculum environment. Students who hold a BEd or a B-degree and PGCE or appropriate NQF Level 7 qualification. An aggregate of a minimum of 65% and higher in the previous qualification, however numbers will be capped in accordance with the Faculty of Education’s enrolment plan. NQF Level 8 4EX L01 Programme code: 4EX L01 – Curriculum code: O601P This BEd Hons programme if offered as a structured two-year programme, with a fixed semester cirriculum. What is the programme Educational Management and Leadership about? Educational Management and Leadership involve an in-depth study of the three fields of study and research in a developing democracy. The study focuses on theories and problems and the fields of Education Management in a legal and Constitutional dispensation, and on the impact of Comparative Education on Education Management and Law at national and international levels in a globalised and diverse education landscape. Who should apply? Professionals who are passionate about Educational Leadership and Management and wish to become more knowledgeable in the field of education management, education law and comparative education. Educators who are building a career path in academia, promotional positions in schools such as Head of Department, deputy principal and principal or a curriculum advisor. What can obtaining this degree do for you? This degree engages with international and national trends in the field of Educational Management and Leadership. The conjunction of three fields to provide students with high-quality knowledge and skills in these fields. E-Learning, as is applicable to Educational Management and Leadership and provides practical experience to self-directed and digitised learning. Research methodology and the application thereof in one of the three fields of scholarship in Educational Management and Comparative Education. The skills needed to provide leadership in a postcolonial and non-racial education system. Students who hold a BEd or a B-degree and PGCE or appropriate NQF Level 7 qualification. What si the programme Life Orientation? What is Life Orientation? If you are passionate about people and wish to support and guide them in reaching their full potential, then this would be an appropriate qualification for you. The aim of this specialised programme is to study various challenges towards the development and learning of individual learners. Likewise, the focus will be on strategies and interventions that may facilitate positive development and learning in individuals and communities. Who should apply? Students who are passionate about Life Orientation and Life Skills and wish to become more knowledgeable about a holistic approach to education. Students who hold a BEd or a B-degree and PGCE or appropriate Level 7 qualification. Students who wish to specialise in Life Orientation and Life Skills, require this qualification to enrol for a MEd in Life Orientation. What can obtaining this degree do for you? Guidance and Support (LOHO 671) aims at a holistic approach towards learners that provide personal development, guidance and support to become change agents and promoting well-being through Life Orientation. Theories and Perspectives (LOHO 611) provides a theoretical grounding, terminology, concepts and principles related to teaching strategies in Life Orientation and Life Skills. Community Engagement (LOHO 622) deals with purpose, principles, concepts and theories of community engagement in the local and global context of Life Orientation. Research Theory and Practice (ERTP 671) Education theories and concepts resulting in a research project to investigate an identified problem in Life Orientation or Life Skills, conducted under supervision and scientifically reported. What is the programme Mathematics Education about? In Mathematics Education we study teaching-learning practices in Mathematics. It comprises deep knowledge of the methodology of Mathematics Education, but also the Mathematical knowledge that is necessary for the teaching-learning of Mathematics. This degree engages with The BEd Honours programme in Mathematics Education at the North-West University (NWU) is constructed against the background of the high national priority given to Mathematics Education at school and the urgent need for high- level expertise and skills in respect of teaching-learning, training and research aimed at the improvement of the Mathematics Education. The qualification is aimed at improving the level of decision-making skills and competence in respect of the planning, implementation, assessment and support of efficient and relevant Mathematics Education. What is Special Needs Education? If you are passionate about people and wish to support and guide them in reaching their full potential, then this would be an appropriate qualification for you. The aim of this specialised programme is to study various challenges towards the development and learning of individual learners. Likewise, the focus will be on strategies and interventions that may facilitate positive development and learning in individuals and communities. What can obtaining this degree do for you? There are subject-specific modules aimed at learners with special needs within the broad context of Inclusive Education in a developing country. Aspects of Community-educational Psychology, Health Promotion in Schools, Facilitation and Lay Counselling, Applied Learning Support and Life Orientation will be studied. There are also modules dealing with research methodology and a research project in the field of Special Needs Education. Who should apply?
